Why Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity Cite Different Sources

Direct answer

AI search platforms cite different sources because they use different indexes, retrieval systems, and source preferences. Visibility in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, or Perplexity therefore does not automatically transfer to the others, which makes platform-specific AEO measurement and prioritisation important.

Key takeaways

  • AI search platforms do not rely on the same sources. The article cites research showing only limited overlap between the most-cited domains across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
  • Google AI Overviews combines authoritative websites with video and community content, including sources such as YouTube and Reddit.
  • ChatGPT leans more heavily toward major publishers and high-authority editorial domains, making third-party coverage especially relevant.
  • Perplexity aligns more closely with traditional Google rankings, so existing SEO performance can provide a stronger starting point.
  • AEO should be measured by platform. The fundamentals overlap, but tactics should reflect the AI experiences your buyers actually use.

AI search is not one channel with one ranking system. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity use different indexes and show clear differences in the sources they cite.

Visibility in one engine therefore does not guarantee visibility in another. Effective answer engine optimization (AEO) requires marketers to understand what each platform rewards.

AI Platforms Don’t Rely on the Same Leading Sources

Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity rarely rely on the same leading sources. Ahrefs compared the 50 most-cited domains across the three platforms and found that only seven appeared in all three lists—a 14% overlap.¹

  • Only seven of the 50 most-cited domains appeared on every platform.
  • Visibility in one AI engine does not automatically transfer to the others.
  • Each platform has its own index, biases, and source preferences.

The finding challenges the idea of one universal AEO playbook. A website might appear regularly in Perplexity because it performs well in Google, yet remain absent from ChatGPT because it lacks recognition from major publishers.

For B2B marketing teams, the practical lesson is simple: measure AI visibility by platform. A single aggregated visibility score can hide significant strengths and weaknesses.

Google AI Overviews: Websites, YouTube, and Reddit

Google AI Overviews cites established websites alongside video and community content. This rewards brands that demonstrate expertise across several formats.

  • Authoritative and encyclopedic sources appear prominently, particularly for high-stakes subjects such as health and finance. This suggests that established expertise remains an important selection signal.²
  • YouTube accounts for 5.6% of all Google AI Overview citations. This makes video a meaningful source for AI visibility rather than merely a supporting content format.³
  • Reddit is another frequently cited source, showing that Google also uses first-hand experiences and community discussions to shape its answers.²

Google therefore looks beyond conventional web pages. YouTube provides demonstrations and expert explanations, while Reddit surfaces first-hand experiences that brand content may not contain.

Brands targeting Google AI Overviews should therefore combine authoritative website content with useful videos and authentic participation in relevant communities. Publishing more articles alone may not be enough.

ChatGPT: Major Publishers

ChatGPT relies heavily on established publishers, online media, and high-authority editorial websites. Strong Google rankings by themselves are less likely to secure consistent ChatGPT citations.

  • The median Domain Rating of ChatGPT's most-cited pages is 90. This indicates that its citations typically come from exceptionally authoritative domains rather than average company websites.²
  • Frequently cited domains include Wikipedia, Forbes, Business Insider, Wired, Amazon, and Reddit. Their prominence reinforces ChatGPT's preference for established editorial and information platforms.²
  • Only 8% to 10% of ChatGPT citations overlap with Google's top 10 organic results. A high Google ranking is therefore not a reliable proxy for ChatGPT visibility.⁴

Together, these findings increase the importance of off-site visibility. A strong article on your website may be less influential than a relevant mention in a publication ChatGPT already trusts.

If ChatGPT matters to your buyers, identify the publishers, industry websites, review platforms, and comparison pages it cites for your target questions. Digital PR, expert contributions, and credible third-party mentions should sit alongside owned content in your strategy.

Perplexity: Aligns With Google Rankings

Perplexity is more closely aligned with conventional SEO than either ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews. Brands with established organic rankings may therefore gain visibility in Perplexity more quickly.

  • Approximately 28.6% of Perplexity citations come from pages in Google's top 10 organic results. This makes existing search performance more relevant to Perplexity than to the other platforms analysed.⁴
  • ChatGPT's overlap with Google's top 10 is only 8% to 10%. The contrast shows why the same SEO foundation can produce very different levels of AI visibility.⁴

Perplexity appears more willing to use pages that have demonstrated relevance in traditional search. SEO and AEO are not identical, but brands with strong rankings have a more direct starting point for Perplexity.

Before creating new content specifically for Perplexity, audit the pages that already rank well. Improve their structure, clarity, factual support, and crawlability so they are easy for both search engines and AI systems to understand.

AI Overviews and AI Mode Are Not Similar

Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode often reach similar conclusions, but they usually support those conclusions with different sources.

  • Their answers are 86% semantically similar, meaning they usually communicate broadly comparable conclusions.⁵
  • Their cited sources overlap by only 13.7%. Similar answers are therefore being assembled from largely different evidence sets.⁵
  • YouTube is AI Mode's most-cited domain by a wide margin, which makes video especially relevant when targeting this experience.⁵
  • AI Mode cites Quora 3.5 times more frequently than AI Overviews and also uses Facebook and Instagram more often. Community and social content therefore play a larger role in AI Mode.⁵

Even AI products from the same company can use different retrieval systems. Marketing teams cannot assume that visibility in one Google AI experience automatically transfers to the other.

Marketing teams should track AI Overviews and AI Mode separately. If AI Mode is important to your audience, YouTube, Quora, and relevant social content may deserve more attention than an AI Overview-focused analysis would suggest.

Choose AI Platforms Based on Your Buyer

Brands should prioritize the platforms their buyers actually use and the channels they can realistically influence. Trying to target every engine equally will spread most marketing teams too thin.

Evaluate each platform using four questions:

  • Audience relevance: Do your target buyers use the platform during research or vendor selection?
  • Commercial relevance: Does the platform answer questions connected to your category, solution, or competitors?
  • Existing visibility: Does your brand already rank, appear in cited publications, or have relevant video and community content?
  • Ability to influence: Can your team realistically improve the source types that the platform prefers?

This approach gives each data point a strategic purpose. Market size may indicate reach, but buyer behaviour and the feasibility of improving visibility determine whether a platform deserves investment.

Choose tactics according to the platform:

  • For ChatGPT, pursue mentions on authoritative editorial sites, industry publications, and niche review platforms.
  • For Google AI Overviews, combine authoritative website content with YouTube and an authentic Reddit presence.
  • For Perplexity, improve pages that already perform strongly in organic search.
  • For Google AI Mode, give more weight to video, community, and social content.

Compare Citations on Each AI Platform

Platform Main source preferences Strategic priority
Google AI Overviews Authoritative websites, YouTube, and Reddit Combine owned content with video and community visibility
ChatGPT Major publishers and high-authority editorial domains Earn credible third-party mentions
Perplexity Pages performing well in organic search Build on existing SEO rankings

Platform-specific citation analysis shows which sources influence AI answers and where competitors have stronger visibility. Without this comparison, marketers risk investing in sources that matter to one engine but have little influence in another.

A practical workflow in Ahrefs Brand Radar is:

  1. Run a blank search to review the broader citation landscape.
  2. Open the Cited Domains report.
  3. Filter the report by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, or Perplexity.
  4. Compare the domains citing your brand with those citing competitors.
  5. Record gaps by platform, source type, and target topic. This turns citation data into a practical list of content, digital PR, video, and community opportunities.²

The analysis might reveal that a publisher influencing ChatGPT never appears in Perplexity, or that a competitor gains Google visibility through YouTube. Turn those differences into priorities for content, digital PR, video, and community participation.

For a broader diagnostic process, use an AI visibility audit to compare brand presence, competitors, cited sources, and narrative gaps across platforms.

If your team wants to understand how AI platforms currently describe your company, where competitors are outperforming you, and which improvements deserve priority, Overflow can help turn the findings into a measurable AEO roadmap.

Build One AEO Foundation

Successful AEO combines universal quality signals with tactics tailored to the sources each platform trusts. High-quality content, topical authority, credible mentions, and clear brand signals support visibility everywhere—but they do not produce identical results across every engine.

Google AI Overviews rewards authority, video, and community content. ChatGPT places more weight on high-authority editorial sources. Perplexity has the strongest relationship with traditional rankings, while Google AI Mode relies more heavily on YouTube, Quora, and social platforms.

The mechanics behind these differences become clearer when you understand how AI search engines retrieve and synthesize information, including real-time retrieval and query fan-out.

The goal is not to appear everywhere through the same tactic. It is to identify where your buyers search and build visibility within the sources those platforms already trust.

Still have questions?

No. Their source overlap is limited because each platform uses different retrieval systems, indexes, and selection logic. A page that is frequently cited in one AI experience may be almost invisible in another, so visibility should be measured separately by platform.

In the research discussed in this article, ChatGPT leans strongly toward major publishers and highly authoritative editorial domains. That makes credible third-party coverage, industry publications, and expert mentions especially important when ChatGPT is a priority platform.

Perplexity shows the strongest relationship with conventional Google rankings among the platforms compared here. The article cites research finding that around 28.6% of Perplexity citations came from pages ranking in Google's organic top 10.

Yes. Keep one strong foundation of useful content, technical accessibility, and credible authority, but adjust tactics by platform. ChatGPT may reward publisher coverage more, Google AI experiences use more video and community sources, and Perplexity is more closely connected to traditional search rankings.
