AI Overviews

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear in Google Search and combine information from multiple sources with links to supporting webpages.

What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated answers that appear directly in Google Search. They summarize information from multiple sources and provide links to webpages that support or expand on the answer.

Google shows AI Overviews when its systems determine that a generative response can help someone understand a topic or answer a question more effectively than traditional search results alone.

How do AI Overviews work?

Instead of only returning a list of webpages, Google can generate an answer to the searcher’s question directly within the search results. Its search systems identify relevant information, combine information from different sources and generate an overview with supporting links.

AI Overviews can use a technique known as query fan-out. Rather than treating a search as one isolated query, Google can issue multiple related searches across subtopics and sources before assembling its response.

This allows Google to answer more complicated questions that would previously have required several separate searches. For example, someone searching for the best CMS for an international B2B marketing team could receive an overview that covers scalability, localization, integrations and editor experience in one answer.

Why are AI Overviews important for marketers?

AI Overviews change what it means to be visible in Google. Traditionally, search visibility was primarily measured through organic rankings. A company wanted its page to rank as high as possible for relevant queries to generate clicks.

With AI Overviews, content can also become a source within the answer itself. That makes AI Overviews part of the broader shift towards AI Search, where visibility increasingly includes whether AI systems understand, mention, cite and recommend a brand.

This means marketers should look beyond rankings and traffic alone. Someone can discover a company, product or point of view inside an AI-generated answer without immediately visiting the website.

How do you appear in Google AI Overviews?

There is no separate submission process or special markup that guarantees inclusion. Google has stated that the same fundamental SEO principles used for normal Search also apply to its AI features. A page generally needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search before it can be shown as a supporting link.

Useful original content, clear page structure, technical accessibility and authority therefore remain important. Accurate schema markup can help make information more explicit to machines, but it should not be treated as a shortcut to AI Overview visibility.

Clear entities and relationships also matter. Entity SEO can make it easier for search systems to understand who a company is, what it offers and how it relates to a topic.

The broader discipline is often described as Answer Engine Optimization: making information easier for AI-powered search and answer engines to discover, understand, trust and cite.

Key takeaway

Google Search is no longer just a list of links. AI Overviews turn search results into generated answers that can surface brands and webpages as sources. For B2B marketers, the goal is therefore not only to rank, but also to publish information that search systems can retrieve, understand and confidently reference.

More B2B. Less generic.
